Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could dedicate her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art can be an instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of social issues and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. Though DuVernay grew up in Compton and with her extended family, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent there to inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she went to her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her the college. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to look over the residence of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to go through their garbage. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments that she was assigned, the journalist chose to go on to a job in public relations. DuVernay began her work working as a junior press assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. After this, she founded her own firm of public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyle and promotional networks like her own Urban Beauty Collective.
